Cultivation

Ajwain is native to India but is also cultivated in Iran, Egypt, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Ajwain Seed, ajowan, or Trachyspermum ammi also known as ajowan caraway, omam, thymol seeds, bishop’s weed, or carom is an annual herb in the family Apiaceae.


Origin

Ajwain originated in the Middle East, possibly in Egypt and the Indian Subcontinent, but also in Iran, Egypt and Afghanistan. In India, the major Ajwain producing states are Rajasthan and Gujarat, where Rajasthan produces about 90% of India’s total production.


Usage

Ajwain Seeds are used as a spice. It is occasionally an ingredient of curry powder. It is traditionally used as a digestive aid, relieves abdominal discomfort due to indigestion and antiseptic.
